The largest of the terriers (50 to 70 pounds), the Airedale’s intelligence is very high. They are loyal, intelligent, and great with kids while simultaneously very protective of home. They live approximately 12 to 15 years; they shed seasonally, have medium exercise needs, and generally only bark when necessary. They are easy to groom, have very little drool, and are hypoallergenic. They adapt to temperature changes very well and are good outdoor activity companions. In the mid-19th century, working-class people created the Airedale Terrier by crossing the English rough-coated black and tan terrier with the otterhound and various other breeds. Some famous Airedales include Jack, a heroic war dog awarded the Victoria Cross; Kitty, the pampered pet of Mrs. John Jacob Astor who went down with the Titanic; and Laddie Boy, the cherished companion of President Warren Harding.
