Brittany Spaniels originated in the Brittany region of France. There are accounts of Brittanys being used as hunting and retrieving dogs as early as the 17th century. They were recognized as a breed in France in 1907 and in America in 1931. The correct name for this breed is simply Brittany. The spaniel was dropped because they are more akin to setters than spaniels. Brittanys range from 19 to 20 inches high and weigh 30 to 40 pounds. They are moderate shedders, but weekly brushing will keep this to a minimum. Brittanys make great family pets, but they do not react well to being left alone for long periods. A Brittany named Dexter has become an internet sensation for walking upright after losing a front leg in an accident when he was a puppy.
