The American Bulldog is descended from the English Bulldog.  They first surfaced in the American south, where they were used as working farm dogs as guardians and stock dogs.  Early on, the breed was known as a White English Southern Bulldog.  Their life expectancy is 10 to 15 years, and they weigh 60 to 130 pounds.  Being a large muscular dog, the breed survived in the deep south primarily due to its ability to hunt down and catch wild pigs.  Keeping American Bulldogs as pets requires structured socialization.  This is not a breed that can be left on its own for extended periods of time.  Good training, including early exposure to children and other dogs, is essential.
