Basset Hound

Basset Hound Products

The Basset Hounds’ sense of smell and ability to ground scent is second only to the Bloodhound. They live 10 to 12 years, weigh 44 to 75 pounds and stand no higher than 14 inches at the shoulder. They are Sweet-Tempered, Tenacious, Friendly, Devoted, Affectionate, and Gentle. Among the most appealing AKC breeds, the endearing and instantly recognizable Basset Hound is a perennial favorite of dog lovers worldwide. This breed can be sometimes stubborn but is always charming. He possesses big-dog strength and stamina with his hefty bone, powerful little legs, and massive paws. Bassets are famous for their mournful eyes and wrinkled brows, which give the breed a sad look. They are not fast, but they move deliberately and effortlessly. The breed’s scenting ability is uncanny; it’s said that only the Bloodhound’s nose is more accurate among dogs. Due to their heavy bodies and short legs, Basset Hounds are not good swimmers and should be closely watched when in the water. The Basset type originated in France and is descended from the 6th-century hounds bred by the friars of the Abbey of Saint Hubert of Belgium. Some famous Basset Hounds are Fred, Burt Reynolds’s dog in Smokey and the Bandit, Flash Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane’s dog in The Dukes of Hazzard, and Hugo, Marilyn Monroe’s dog.
