Bernese Mountain Dogs get thier name from Bern, Switzerland, where Romans brought them about 2,000 years ago. Also called Berners, they were used as farm dogs, and they excelled at droving, drafting, and herding. Berners are well-adapted to the outdoors and make good companions on hikes and outdoor trips. They are known to be gentle and make great family pets. They are the opposite of hypoallergic as they shed a complete coat yearly. They range in size from 23″ to 27″ and weigh from 75 to 120 pounds. Some famous Berners are Hercules, owned by Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and Smelly and Harvey Milkbone in the TV show The New Normal.
