The Bulldog got it’s name from bred initially to compete in bull-baiting events in Britain during the 16th century. Over the years, they developed the block-like bodies, large heads, and jaws that we see in modern bulldogs. The Bulldog is related to mastiff-type dogs and is also known as the English Bulldog. They weigh 40 to 55 pounds and are 16 to 17 inches at the withers. Bulldogs require moderate exercise, which makes them good pets for people living in apartments. Their coats are short and require minimal grooming; however, their face folds should be cleaned regularly. Some famous Bulldogs include Old Boy, owned by President William G. Harding, Meatball, owned by Adam Sandler, and Uga, the mascot for the University of Georgia football team.
