Holsteiner

The Holsteiner is one of the oldest warmblood breeds, originating over 700 years ago in the Schleswig-Holstein region of northern Germany. Initially bred by monks at the Uetersen Monastery, Holsteiners were strong carriage and farm horses, later refined with Andalusian, Thoroughbred, and Trakehner blood to create the athletic sport horse known today. Standing between 16 and 17 hands, they are admired for their powerful build, arched neck, expressive movement, and exceptional jumping ability. Holsteiners have become world-class competitors in show jumping, dressage, and eventing, renowned for their scope, rideability, and courage. The breed rose to international fame in the 20th century, producing Olympic and World Championship medalists. Famous Holsteiners include Meteor, who won three Olympic gold medals in show jumping for Germany, and Classic Touch, the 1992 Olympic gold medalist ridden by Ludger Beerbaum. The stallion Capitol I became one of the most influential sires in modern jumping lines. Notable owners and riders of Holsteiners include Princess Anne, an accomplished equestrian, and American show jumper Laura Kraut. Today, Holsteiners dominate elite jumping arenas and continue to excel in multiple disciplines, their blend of power, elegance, and trainability securing their status as one of the premier sport horse breeds in the world.
