The Jersey Giant is a majestic and massive chicken breed, known as the largest of all chicken breeds. Developed in the late 19th century in New Jersey, USA, it was created by John and Thomas Black with the goal of replacing turkeys as a meat source. The breed was achieved by crossing Black Javas, Dark Brahmas, and Langshans, resulting in a chicken of impressive size, strength, and utility. Jersey Giants are dual-purpose birds, admired for their meat production and egg-laying abilities. Hens typically produce around 150–200 large brown eggs annually. They are slow-growing compared to modern hybrids but are prized for their size, with roosters often weighing up to 13 pounds and hens around 10 pounds. Their docile and friendly temperament makes them a favorite among backyard keepers and small farms. The breed is recognized in three color varieties: black (the original), white, and blue. Notable Jersey Giants include “Big Jake,” a rooster who gained fame for his extraordinary weight and stature, showcasing the breed’s potential. The American Poultry Association officially recognized the breed in 1922, cementing its place in poultry history.
