Neapolitan Mastiff

The Neapolitan Mastiff, often called the “gentle giant,” is a massive and majestic breed with a history dating back to ancient Rome. These dogs are instantly recognizable by their loose, wrinkled skin, massive head, and expressive, drooping eyes. Typically weighing between 110 to 150 pounds, they possess a muscular, stocky frame and a lumbering yet dignified gait. Their coat is short and dense, often appearing in shades of gray, black, mahogany, or tawny.
Bred as formidable guardians, Neapolitan Mastiffs are naturally protective and loyal, forming strong bonds with their families. Despite their imposing appearance, they are known for their calm and affectionate demeanor, especially with children.
One of the most famous Neapolitan Mastiffs is Fang, the loyal and gentle companion of Hagrid in the Harry Potter series. Fang’s portrayal perfectly highlights the breed’s loving and protective nature, despite their intimidating size.
Historically, the breed was prized by Roman armies and later rediscovered in Italy in the 20th century. Their protective instincts make them excellent guard dogs, while their laid-back personality ensures they’re equally content lounging at home.
