The Portuguese Water Dog, also known as the Cão de Água Português, is a breed of dog that originated in Portugal. They were originally bred to be working dogs that helped fishermen in the water by retrieving fish and nets. These dogs are intelligent, loyal, and have a great work ethic. They have a waterproof coat that is curly or wavy, and comes in a variety of colors such as black, white, brown, and parti-color.  The breed became almost extinct in the 20th century due to the advent of technology, but was saved by a wealthy Portuguese businessman named Vasco Bensaude, who started a breeding program. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1983, and has since become a popular family pet and show dog.  Perhaps the most famous Portuguese Water Dog is Bo, who was owned by former President Barack Obama and his family. Bo was given to the family as a gift from Senator Ted Kennedy, who also owned several Portuguese Water Dogs. Bo became a beloved pet and even starred in the White House Christmas video. Another famous owner of the breed is the journalist and talk show host, Anderson Cooper, who has a Portuguese Water Dog named Lily.
