The Bichon Frise originated in Spain and Italy and spread to other areas, especially France, by Spanish and Italian sailors. Bichons were initially used as herding dogs, and the French developed them into lap dogs. Bichons weigh from 10 to 20 pounds and are 23 to 30 inches high. These dogs are charming and intelligent, and their vitality will win people’s hearts where ever they go. They are hypoallergenic with soft and plush coats. Bichons make excellent companions and adapt well to apartment living. Bichons are considered hypoallergenic because the shedding hair gets caught in their undercoat. This makes frequent brushing necessary to prevent matting. Bichons have a reputation for being stubborn when it comes to house training but are quick to learn in every other way.
