Chesapeake Bay Tolling Retriever

The Chesapeake Bay Tolling Retriever, affectionately known as the “Chessie,” is a strong, intelligent, and versatile breed known for its exceptional hunting and retrieving skills. Originating in the United States in the 19th century, the Chessie was bred to retrieve waterfowl in the icy waters of the Chesapeake Bay, making it an excellent swimmer with a dense, waterproof double coat. The breed’s coat comes in shades of brown, sedge, or deadgrass, and its distinctive oily texture provides natural water resistance. Chessies are medium to large-sized dogs with a muscular build and bright, amber-colored eyes that exude intelligence and determination. They are known for their loyalty and protective nature, making them excellent family dogs when well-socialized. While independent thinkers, they respond well to consistent, positive training. One of the breed’s most famous representatives was “Sailor,” one of the two original dogs said to have been rescued from a shipwreck in 1807, giving rise to the Chesapeake Bay Retriever line. The breed has also been popular among notable outdoor enthusiasts and hunters, including U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt. Today, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers excel not only in hunting and field trials but also as therapy dogs, search-and-rescue workers, and beloved family companions. Their resilience and loyalty make them truly unique.
