The Papillon, also known as the Continental Toy Spaniel, is a small breed of dog known for its distinctive butterfly-like ears. It is a friendly, intelligent, and lively dog and makes a great companion for families.  The breed is believed to have originated in France, and its name is derived from the French word for butterfly due to the distinctive shape of its ears. Papillons were popular among European royalty in the 16th and 17th centuries and were often seen in paintings of the era. They were also used as lap dogs and were trained to perform tricks for their owners.  In the 19th century, Papillons were crossed with other toy spaniels, leading to a decline in the breed’s distinct butterfly ear shape. However, breeders eventually re-established the breed’s unique ear shape, leading to the Papillon we know today.  Famous Papillon owners include Marie Antoinette, who was said to have taken her Papillon with her to the guillotine during the French Revolution. Other notable Papillon owners include Madame de Pompadour, King Louis XIV, and Pablo Picasso.
