The American Foxhound is a sleek, athletic breed known for its keen sense of smell, endurance, and friendly demeanor. Standing 21-25 inches tall and weighing between 60-70 pounds, this breed is characterized by its long, lean legs, floppy ears, and a smooth, short coat that is typically tricolor, including combinations of black, white, and tan. Developed in the United States, American Foxhounds descend from English Foxhounds brought to the colonies in the 17th century, selectively bred for speed and hunting prowess. Bred primarily for fox hunting, they are renowned for their stamina, determination, and a melodic baying voice, making them effective and spirited hunting companions. Despite their hunting roots, they are affectionate, sociable, and get along well with children and other dogs. Famous American Foxhounds include George Washington’s pack. Often called the “Father of the American Foxhound,” Washington played a key role in refining the breed. His dedication to breeding these dogs for both work and companionship left a lasting legacy.
